Managing the Adult Classroom
Four modules are included. Modules 1 and 2 provide descriptions of five styles of management and four types of instructors. Module 3 is dedicated to the theoretical and practical implications of discipline as it relates to adult students. Module 4 includes five sections on topics related to andragogy (the art or science of teaching adults) and the management of adult education.

Module 1: Management Styles
- Describe strategies for building positive instructor-student relationships in adult education.
- Identify culturally responsive and technology-supported strategies to effectively manage adult learning environments.
- Identify the key characteristics of the authoritarian classroom management style.
- Describe the key characteristics of the authoritative classroom management style.
- Describe the key characteristics of the facilitative management style.
- Compare the key features of the laissez-faire and democratic styles of classroom management.
Module 2: Types of Instructors
- Differentiate among four instructor types: Controller, Buddy, Guide, and Apathete.
- Identify the impact of a given instructor type on classroom management effectiveness.
- Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of Controller, Buddy, and Apathete instructor styles.
- Explain how the Guide integrates effective elements of other instructor styles to create a productive classroom environment.
- Explain how instructors can adapt their management styles to that of the Guide.
- Identify the four steps of a management plan to support effective classroom management.
Module 3: Discipline in Adult Education
- Explain how adult learning theories support approaches to classroom discipline in adult education.
- Identify intervention strategies for managing adult learner behavior in an educational setting.
- Identify a key characteristic of effective school-wide discipline.
- Choose a behavior-focused classroom management strategy that addresses disruptions while maintaining student dignity.
Module 4: Additional Relevant Topics
- Explain a core principle of andragogy and transformational teaching.
- Identify an instructional strategy that enhances motivation through relevance, instructor attitude, and effective classroom management.
- Describe a self-directed learning strategy that enhances adult classroom participation.
- Describe structured, interactive, and flexible online learning environments that support adult learners’ needs.
- Explain how educational technology supports adult learner engagement and retention.
